Adopted by the U. S. Army in 1941 as the primary winter headgear for wearing under the steel helmet, this cap achieved iconic status during and since WWII, being ubiquitously worn on its own without the helmet more often than most commanding officers would have liked. Often unofficially called a “Jeep Cap,” its was officially known as simply Wool Knit Cap Model 1941. Today, copies of this classic cap style abound in many colors and variants, but the original fit and design in genuine olive drab is still the best, at least to Buzz Rickson’s.
Manufactured to all of the precision and quality Buzz Rickson’s brand has come to be respected for throughout the world, this M-1941 Winter Cap recreation includes the correct gauge of wool yarn in a dense weave for greater insulation, and dyed in one of the classic shades of olive drab in which these caps can be found. The short visor is internally stiffened with a cardboard-like material, exactly as per the original caps, which is flexible and allows the visor to be molded into several personal styles and forms. The original roll-up ear flap is, of course, part of the design which allows it to be readily pulled down when weather conditions warrant.
The vintage caps were sized to fit snugly and covered more than one head size, but Buzz Rickson’s elected to employee a wool with greater elasticity, hence this cap is one-size-fits-all, though a size label bearing the printed mark “M” for medium is found inside the cap purely for authentic appearances.
This is another home run for Buzz Rickson’s!
